Five hundred years before the birth of Jesus, a God-realized being named Lao-tzu in ancient China dictated 81 verses, which are regarded by many as the ultimate commentary on the nature of our existence. The classic text of these 81 verses, called the Tao Te Ching or the Great Way, offers advice and guidance that is balanced, moral, spiritual, and always concerned with working for the good. In this book, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer has reviewed hundreds of translations of the Tao Te Ching and has written 81 distinct essays on how to apply the ancient wisdom of Lao-tzu to today's modern world. This work contains the entire 81 verses of the Tao, compiled from Wayne's researching of 10 of the most well-respected translations of text that have survived for more than 25 centuries. Each chapter is designed for actually living the Tao or the Great Way today. Some of the chapter titles are 'Living with Flexibility,' 'Living Without Enemies,' and 'Living by Letting Go.' Each of the 81 brief chapters focuses on living the Tao and concludes with a section called 'Doing the Tao Now.' Wayne spent one entire year reading, researching, and meditating on Lao-tzu's messages, practicing them each day and ultimately writing down these essays as he felt Lao-tzu wanted you to know them. This is a work to be read slowly, one essay a day. As Wayne says, 'This is a book that will forever change the way you look at your life, and the result will be that you'll live in a new world aligned with nature. Writing this book changed me forever, too. I now live in accord with the natural world and feel the greatest sense of peace I've ever experienced. I'm so proud to present this interpretation of the Tao Te Ching, and offer the same opportunity for change that it has brought me.'

The award-winning Expositor's Bible Commentary, now available in this handy softcover edition, has established itself as one of the leading and most practical evangelical commentaries. Written for pastors and Bible students, it is scholarly and comprehensive without being overly academic. The seventy-eight contributors of The Expositor's Bible Commentary are committed to the complete trustworthiness and full authority of the Bible. They come from the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand, and represent many denominations, including Anglican, Baptist, Brethren, Methodist, Nazarene, Presbyterian, and Reformed. In matters where marked differences of opinion exist, the contributors state their own convictions and deal fairly and without animosity with opposing views. The Expositor's Bible Commentary is based on the New International Version of the Bible, but may be used with any translation. Greek and Hebrew words have been transliterated to make the material accessible to readers unfamiliar with the biblical languages. Technical questions and textual issues are briefly dealt with in notes at the end of each section.

Karl Barth is known as one of the greatest Christian theologians of modern times. While Barth's writings are permeated by biblical citations and exegesis, there are only a few examples of Barth's interpretation of an entire biblical book. In this anniversary edition of The Epistle to the Philippians, Karl Barth's exposition of the book of Philippians is again made available. Two new introductory essays by Bruce L. McCormack and Francis B. Watson examine the significance of Barth's theological exegesis of Philippians and introduce Barth's approach to biblical interpretation.

This is a guidebook to help children who: hurt, hit, bite, smash, kick, shout, scream or who are out of control, hyperaroused or hyperactive; can only discharge their angry feelings in verbal or physical attacks, rather than being able to think about and reflect on what they feel are angry because it is easier than feeling hurt or sad; are locked in anger or rage because of sibling rivalry; are controlling and punitive; regularly defy authority or are diagnosed with a conduct disorder; commit cold acts of cruelty, hurt animals or do not cry any more; spoil, damage or destroy what others do or make; create fear in others because they have locked away their own fears; do not want to please people, cannot trust, have stopped looking for love or approval or truly believe they do not need anyone do not really know how to 'like' someone, and definitely do not know how to love someone or are affectionate only if they want something. "How Hattie Hated Kindness" is a story for children locked in rage or hate. Hattie lives by herself on an island. Lots of people try to bring kindness to Hattie, but each time she is very horrid to them, smashing and spoiling everything they try to do for her. So after a while they all stop trying and Hattie is very alone. With the help of the lapping water-over-her-toes, Hattie understands that because she'd been a very sad and frightened little girl in a too hard world, she had become hard too, so that the awful fear and the awful pain would go away.

McSweeney's Issue 4 is a box containing 14 booklets. The booklets feature fiction and nonfiction, from Denis Johnson, Haruki Murakami, Sheila Heti, George Saunders, Jonathan Lethem, Rachel Cohen, Lawrence Weschler, Rick Moody, Lydia Davis, and many others. The first of many experiments in book and magazine packaging, McSweeney's Issue 4 marks a departure from the simpler paperback mold of the first three issues. For this issue, authors chose the art and design of their booklet. So, for example, Denis Johnson chose to use his son Matt's doodle for the cover of his three-act play "Hellhound On My Trail." George Saunders gave us a photo he took years ago, in Russia, for the cover of his "Four Institutional Monologues." And we took all of these booklets, and fit them in a box with a wood-footed bird adorned on the top. (For those asking Why?, there is also a booklet devoted to answering that question, written by editor Dave Eggers.) This rare issue, virtually out of print since it was first published, is now lovingly remade with a sturdier, more archive-worthy box and the same wondrous collection of prose.

In almost all critical writings on the horror film, woman is conceptualised only as victim. In The Monstrous-Feminine Barbara Creed challenges this patriarchal view by arguing that the prototype of all definitions of the monstrous is the female reproductive body. With close reference to a number of classic horror films including the Alien trilogy, The Exorcist and Psycho, Creed analyses the seven 'faces' of the monstrous-feminine: archaic mother, monstrous womb, vampire, witch, possessed body, monstrous mother and castrator. Her argument that man fears woman as castrator, rather than as castrated, questions not only Freudian theories of sexual difference but existing theories of spectatorship and fetishism, providing a provocative re-reading of classical and contemporary film and theoretical texts.

In the spring of 1922, several months after completing "Siddhartha," Hermann Hesse wrote a fairy tale that was also a love story, inspired by the woman who was to become his second wife. That story, "Pictor's Metamorphoses," is the centerpiece of this anthology of Hesse's luminous short fiction. Based on "The Arabian Nights" and the work of the Brothers Grimm, the nineteen stories collected here represent a half century of Hesse's short writings. They display the full range of Hesse's lifetime fascination with fantasy--as dream, fairy tale, satire, or allegory.

Gaston Palewski, was the Free French commander and one of the most influential politicians in post-war Europe. "Black people are not dark-skinned white people," says advertising visionary Tom Burrell. In fact, they are much more. They are survivors of the Middle Passage and centuries of humiliation and deprivation, who have excelled against the odds, constantly making a way out of "No way!" At this pivotal point in history, the idea of black inferiority should have had a "Going-Out-of-Business Sale." After all, Barack Obama has reached America's Promised Land.Yet, as "Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority" testifies, too many in black America are still wandering in the wilderness. In this powerful examination of "the greatest propaganda campaign of all time"--the masterful marketing of black inferiority, aka the BI Complex--Burrell poses ten disturbing questions that will make black people look in the mirror and ask why, nearly 150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, so many blacks still think and act like slaves. Burrell's acute awareness of the power of words and images to shift, shape, and change the collective consciousness has led him to connect the contemporary and historical dots that have brought us to this crossroads. """Brainwashed" is not a reprimand--it is a call to action. It demands that we question our self-defeating attitudes and behaviors. Racism is not the issue; how "we""respond" to media distortions and programmed self-hatred is the issue. It's time to reverse the BI campaign with a globally based initiative that harnesses the power of new media and the wisdom of intergenerational coalitions. Provocative and powerful, "Brainwashed" dares to expose the wounds so that we, at last, can heal.
